Abstract

Adzuki bean (Vigna angularis (Willd.) Ohwi & Ohashi) is a traditional and economically most important food legume crop that plays a crucial role in supply of protein and other bioactive compounds to poor man, and it was cultivated antecedent as wild Vigna angularis var. nipponensis; family Fabaceae or Leguminosae and also known as azuki bean, aduki bean, red bean, or red mung bean. It is mostly grown under a wide range of climate conditions including warm temperate, tropical regions, as annual, self-pollinating, rarely biennial, bushy erect, or twining herb. Adzuki bean had good source of proteins, starch, essential fatty acids, fiber, minerals, and phytochemical constituents, such as total phenolic compounds, flavonoids, saponins, antioxidant, hepato-protective effects, antiobesity, and anticancer, such as pharmacological effects. It has great potential to be drug candidate, globally China, Japan, Taiwan, and South Korean, are major countries where it has been cultivated and 12 rank among most important food legume crops in the world.
