Abstract

Zebrafish have become a popular animal model for behavioral genetics and to study the effects of alcohol on the brain. The reported effects acute (short-term) and chronic (long-term) alcohol exposure on zebrafish brain and behavior have provided significant insights into this drug’s mechanism of action. In this chapter, I will focus on the behavioral genetics of alcohol exposure by discussing the effects of acute and chronic alcohol exposure on zebrafish behavior, neurochemistry, and gene expression. Furthermore, I will discuss the advantages of using forward and reverse genetic techniques with zebrafish to dissect the mechanisms underlying alcohol’s effect on the central nervous system.
