Abstract
This chapter comprises a brief introduction to water treatment, highlighting the common sources of raw water such as groundwater as well as river, lake, and reservoir water. Wetlands are often associated with the shores of the latter three water sources. Some common standard water treatment processes such as coagulation, flocculation, and filtration are briefly outlined to readers interested not only in wastewater and stormwater treatment but also in drinking (potable) water treatment. More detailed information is available in subsequent chapters. Basic water chemistry principles like processes associated with pH adjustment are also outlined for the benefit of readers unfamiliar with chemistry. After studying this chapter, readers should appreciate basic water treatment principles and processes linked to the most common sources of raw water such as river water, which can be considerably polluted, particularly in urban areas.
