Chapter 2. The Relationship Between Integration And EU Law And Policy

Abstract

This Chapter examines the changing relationship between integration and EU law and policy on immigration. It studies the origins and main developments affecting the concepts, approaches and institutional structures covering the category of integration since the first European responses on immigration up to the Treaty of Amsterdam. The first part of the Chapter tracks the category of integration during the stages preceding the progressive Europeanisation of the domain of immigration since 1999. The second section centres on the consequences of the new procedures and structures introduced by the Treaty of Amsterdam to Title IV TEC. The entry into force of the Maastricht Treaty, or Treaty on European Union (TEU), in November 1993 marked a new stage in relation to the institutional configurations and harmonisation processes of immigration.Keywords: European Union (EU) law; Maastricht era; Treaty on European Union (TEC)
