Abstract
The chapter on Symmetry and Point Groups is intended to present the importance of symmetry in molecules and everyday life. The idea regarding symmetry elements and symmetry operations has been illustrated with the help of suitable diagrams and figures. Easy to appreciate approaches for classifications of point groups have been provided. The point groups associated with chiral molecules and achiral molecules have been presented. An adequate number of examples for point groups have been provided. The difference between asymmetric and dissymmetric molecules has been provided. The method to estimate Symmetry numbers has been presented with illustrative examples. The symmetry numbers associated with the individual point groups have been provided.
