Abstract

Abstract The pH-responsive membranes are discussed in this chapter and great importance is given to their fundamentals and advancements. The different pH-responsive groups, along with various techniques used to fabricate pH-responsive materials and membranes, are explained in the initial sections of the chapter. The later sections of the chapter discuss different flat and hollow fiber configurations of pH-responsive membranes, namely, direct blended, surface grafted and coated, and pore filled. Also, the electroviscous effect and the role of membrane pore size change on the separation and permeability of pH-responsive membranes are elaborated for better understanding of the phenomenon of pH responsiveness. Lastly, the chapter is summarized in the final section of the chapter.
