Abstract
Publisher Summary Lexical ambiguity and especially part-of-speech ambiguity is the source of much non-determinism in parsing. The chapter states that handling lexical ambiguity is a major test for deterministic parsing. It presents many cases of ambiguity that can be resolved in a simple way. This is possible because of the constraints imposed on English by number agreement and word order. Many cases of the seemingly difficult problems of lexical ambiguity can be easily resolved in a deterministic parser, because it uses more information to make decisions. In parsing English, one of the major causes of non-determinism is part-of-speech ambiguity. If a word can be two parts of speech, then a non-deterministic parser may have to explore both possibilities. The chapter explores lexical ambiguity considering both simple and complex examples.
