Abstract

Molecular rigidity and planarity of π-conjugated systems can be enhanced by boron complexation. Therefore, boron complexes with π-conjugated ligands are recognized as a versatile platform for designing luminescent dyes. However, aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) still prevents us from extending applicability of boron complexes for advanced optoelectronic materials. In this chapter, one of the solutions for overcoming the ACQ problem is initially illustrated based on aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-active boron complexes. Furthermore, recent reports demonstrated that various types of stimuli-responsive luminochromism in solid states can be obtained from AIE-active boron complexes. From these results, we introduce significant applications for stimuli-responsive luminochromic materials. Mechanisms and design concepts for environmental sensors are presented. Not only fundamental chemistry but also applications are described here.
