Abstract

Chapter 2 explains the nature of friction and its role in our ability to move. Frictional forces generated in the process of walking are calculated. The essential ability of the body to reduce frictional forces by lubrication of joints is examined. The frictional damage due to inadequate lubrication of hip and knee joints is discussed. Fins of some fish are composed of un-lubricated bone providing a retractable defensive weapon. A quantitative analysis of such a configuration is developed. Exercises are provided to expand the understanding of the concepts presented.
