Abstract

Point-of-care (PoC) diagnosis enables healthcare professionals to accurately perform lab-quality diagnostic test in real time within minutes rather than hours. It ensures patient to receive most effective and efficient care and health professional to track patient status or treatment response in real time. Hence, the advent of PoC devices has achieved widespread public attention in the field of medicine and personal health management by allowing continuous health monitoring outside the clinic. In addition, such devices are able to detect several physiological stimuli related to some dreadful diseases allowing to diagnose in their early stage. Over the last decade, material scientist and device engineers are working in the same platform to develop self-powered, flexible, lightweight, miniaturized and integrated PoC devices. This chapter summarizes basic working principle, recent progress, and development strategy of PoC devices developed till date. An overview of different active materials, fabrication techniques, and power systems used in such devices also has been included. Finally, the chapter concludes with limitation of presently available devices and their future applications.
