Abstract

The primary competition for fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) will be the cable TV operator's hybrid fiber-coax (HFC) network, possibly with competition from the telephone company's digital subscriber line (DSL) service in areas where they have suitable plant. The prime area of competition today is data speed. Cable operators are able to exceed 100Mb/s in some places, and have plans to go higher, though how much higher they can go while maintaining expected video service is questionable. If you deploy your network correctly you will win over the cable operator every time, but don't expect him to give up easily—he won't.
