Abstract

The main objective of this chapter is to introduce the controller design of direct current (DC) motors to help the understanding of those of alternating current (AC) motors. DC motors have been widely used for many motor drive applications requiring speed or position control. However, their utilization has been greatly reduced due to their periodic maintenance requirement. Instead, AC motors are taking over this role. Thus the current and speed controllers of DC motors is introduced because we can use the same method for designing the current and speed controllers of AC motors. This chapter goes into detail about the design of the current and speed proportional–integral controllers of DC motors along with the anti-windup control and integral-proportional controller. A chopper to produce the applied voltage to DC motors and its pulse width modulation techniques are explained. Lastly, how to perform a simulation for the DC motor drive system using MATLAB/Simulink is studied.
