Abstract

This chapter reviews the current state of additive manufacturing (AM) technology as applied to aluminium-based alloys and composites. After an introduction to the various metal AM processes, the specific processes that are being applied with Al alloys, including Selective Laser Melting and the family of Directed Energy Deposition, are described. The various Al alloy systems that are presently being used for AM, and the effect of the AM process parameters used and postbuild heat treatments on the microstructure and properties of the resulting parts are discussed. The need to tailor Al alloy systems that exploit the inherent characteristics of AM processes is highlighted and the efforts currently underway are presented. Application of AM technology to the fabrication of Al metal matrix composites is explored.
