Abstract

The numerous complicated issues the construction sector faces, such as cost and time overruns, health and safety concerns, productivity issues, and labour shortages, significantly restrict its ability to grow. Additionally, the construction industry is one of the least digitally advanced in the world, which makes it challenging for it to address the issues it is currently facing. Artificial intelligence (AI), a cutting-edge digital technology, is currently revolutionizing sectors like manufacturing, retail, and telecommunications. Machine learning, knowledge-based systems, computer vision, robotics, and optimization are examples of AI subfields that have been effectively implemented in different industries to boost profitability, efficiency, safety, and security. Despite the advantages of AI applications, the construction industry nevertheless faces a number of AI-related problems. The goal of this study is to decipher AI applications, look at AI methods in use, and pinpoint opportunities and difficulties for AI applications in the construction sector. A rigorous analysis of the body of research on AI’s uses in the construction sector, including activity monitoring, risk management, resource and waste optimization, was carried out. This study also highlighted and discussed the prospects and difficulties associated with AI applications in the construction industry. This study offers insights into important AI applications as they relate to difficulties unique to the construction industry, as well as the approach to realize the attainable benefits of AI in the sector.
