Abstract

The closed transplant production system (CTPS), a type of closed plant production system (CPPS), is useful for: (1) the production of insect- and pesticide-free transplants, (2) shortening the transplant production period by 30–40% compared with that using a greenhouse by means of optimal environmental control including CO2 enrichment, (3) increasing the annual transplant productivity per unit land area, and (4) improving the traceability of the transplant production process. In this chapter, firstly, the main components and functions of the CTPS are described, as well as the annual productivity and electricity cost per transplant. Secondly, the ecophysiology of transplant production is discussed. Thirdly, production schemes for several medicinal and horticultural transplants are described. Finally, the propagation and production of blueberry and strawberry transplants are introduced.
