Abstract

This chapter introduces an alternative approach for the simulation of continuous time systems where the time discretization of conventional numerical schemes is replaced by the quantization of the state variables. This approach, instead of approximating the continuous time systems by discrete time systems, leads to discrete event approximations that can be represented within the DEVS formalism framework. In these numerical algorithms, known as Quantized State Systems (QSS) methods, the simulation steps are local to the states that experience significant changes. In that way, calculations are performed only when and where changes occur producing, in some situations, noticeable advantages.
