Abstract

In this chapter, some additional topics that are useful for practical applications of optimization are presented. The concept of meta-models is explained. It involves developing simplified models for complex analysis problems. For this, the response surface method (RSM) is presented and illustrated. Design of experiments is explained, which can help in determining the sample points for development of meta-models. The ideas of orthogonal arrays and discrete design using orthogonal arrays are explained and illustrated. Then the robust design approach, developed by Taguchi in 1980s, is presented and illustrated. This approach has many practical applications and has been used in many industries to produce robust designs and processes. Finally, the topic of reliability-based design optimization (RBDO) is presented. The basic ideas of design under uncertainty are presented. Background material related to this topic is also reviewed. Calculation of reliability index for structural design problems is explained and illustrated.
