Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to establish a variety of contexts and purposes of geriatric neuropsychological assessment, to describe contemporary issues associated with neuropsychological assessment of older adults, and to review recent empirical literature associated with the use of newly developed and commonly used cognitive and mood assessment instruments with older adults. Neuropsychological assessment of older adults has assumed a prominent role in a variety of contexts. For example, neuropsychological assessment plays a critical role in evaluations for dementia and for tracking dementia-related changes. Neuropsychologists also use assessment results to tailor specific rehabilitation strategies for older adults based on their individual patterns of strengths and weaknesses, thereby maximizing treatment outcomes. Pre- and post-surgical neuropsychological assessment has been successful in identifying particular pre-surgical or post-surgical risk factors for complications, and it can generate strategies for treating or rehabilitating adverse post-surgical outcomes, should they occur. Results of neuropsychological evaluation are also essential for monitoring outcomes of pharmacologic and behavioral treatments and appropriateness of specific placements.
