Abstract

Bio-based packaging materials are the eco-friendly alternative to nonrenewable petroleum-based packaging materials. These materials are suitable because of their ample availability, low cost, biodegradability, and renewability. On the other hand, poor mechanical and water vapor permeable properties are the drawback of biopolymers for packaging application. But the bionanocomposites contain the superiority of biopolymers along with high mechanical, thermal, antimicrobial, gas and vapor barrier properties, etc. The bionanocomposites suitable for food packaging are made up of starch, chitosan, polycaprolactam, polylactic acid, poly(butylene succinate), polyhydroxy butyrate, etc. The suitable nanofiller for these matrices are kaolinite and montmorillonite. In addition to these, certain smart materials are added to achieve antimicrobial, oxygen scavenging, and sensor properties. This chapter highlights the essential properties of food packaging materials and the role of nanofillers in food packaging applications. It also gives a comprehensive idea about the consequence of the use of nanomaterial on environment and living organisms. This chapter deals the various methods for characterization of bionanocomposites along with different properties that are important for enabling the materials toward packaging applications.
