Abstract

Ayurveda is a comprehensive system of natural healthcare that originated in the ancient Vedic times of India. Translated as the ‘Science of Life,’ Ayurveda’s primary emphasis is prevention of disease and maintenance of health and wellbeing. It also provides treatment for a wide range of chronic diseases, including brain and neurological disorders. Ayurvedic modalities address all aspects of life. Diet and digestion are considered to be crucial to the prevention and treatment of disease. Brain and neurological disorders are considered to be the result of disturbances in the psychophysiological principle known as Vata, which has the properties of space and air. As such, the foods and dietary supplements used in prevention and treatment generally have properties that balance Vata in the system.
