Abstract

The development of multiple drug resistance among pathogens is of universal concern nowadays. It is generally because of nontargeted use of medicines, sustained practice of an antibiotic or chemotherapeutic remedies, and prolonged use of antibiotic without understanding the antibiogram design of pathogens and noncompletion of recommended drugs dose. The resistant organism can persist in the community and among themselves by the method of horizontal gene transfer. This has paved way for the development of plant-derived medicines or more precisely herbal medicines because these products generally do not show side effects and do not add any physiological pressure on the pathogens for the development of drug resistance. However, the advancement and usage of herbal products are impeded by various factors. This chapter summarizes the potential role of phytochemicals against various microbial agents, their possible targets, and limitations. Special attention has been made to enlisting the antimicrobial activity of existing medicines, which are reported from time to time in literature.
