Abstract

Publisher Summary This chapter assumes some basic knowledge of capillary electrophoresis (CE) theory and practice. In addition, different CE modes that are currently available are described. It also provides a short description of the equipment involved, with special emphasis on the systems that are commercially available. It also deals with the special injection tricks that are required for large-volume injection and trace enrichment in capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE). Most of the CE work so far has been done using the CZE mode. Analytes are separated on the basis of differences in their electrophoretic mobilities, which are related to their charge densities. The separation is carried out in a capillary filled with a continuous background electrolyte (buffer). The direction and the velocity of migration of the analytes are determined by both electrophoresis and electroosmosis. Electrokinetic capillary chromatography is also explained in the chapter.
