Abstract

Despite evidence that poor adherence to prescribed eye drop medications can result in vision loss, visual field progression, and higher risk of blindness, about half of glaucoma patients do not adhere to their medications. Adherence is a multidimensional behavior. Therefore adherence needs to be evaluated on an individual level. Health behavior models may serve as framework to understand and identify the factors that contribute to poor adherence, since more than one factor may be contributing to adherence in a poor adherent patient, and each of them can receive specific interventions. In this chapter, we discuss how available interventions can address these components, including patient education, screening for psychiatric conditions, eye drop delivery aids, electronic reminders, adherence trackers, and sustained-release implantable devices.
