Abstract

This chapter discusses granting of legal aid. Persons to whom legal aid is granted are liable to make such contribution as the court may order in respect of the costs incurred on their behalf as appears to the court to be reasonable in regard to their resources and commitments, and sometimes they may be liable for the whole cost. Criminal Statistics publishes the numbers granted or refused legal aid for representation at magistrate's court proceedings for solicitor, or solicitor and counsel, in relation to type of proceedings—summary trial for indictable or non-indictable offenses, committal proceedings, and juvenile court care or criminal proceedings. The total numbers refused or granted legal aid for representation at the Crown Court are given according to the type of court hearing, the application, and the type of proceedings. For those granted legal aid, the number receiving aid for solicitor, solicitor and one (or two) counsel, or counsel only is given in relation to type of proceedings.
