Abstract

The finite element solution of three-dimensional heat transfer problems is considered. First, the solution of axisymmetric heat transfer problems is presented by stating the mathematical form of the governing differential equation and the associated boundary conditions in cylindrical coordinates. A step-by-step procedure is given for the solution of the problem along with an illustrative example. The solution of steady-state three-dimensional heat transfer problems using the finite element method is presented using a step-by-step procedure. The tetrahedron element is used in the procedure. The computation of element matrices and element vectors is illustrated through an example. Finally, the solution of unsteady-state problems is briefly explained and the matrix associated with the unsteady-state term is derived for axisymmetric and general three-dimensional problems using triangular and tetrahedral coordinates, respectively.
