Abstract

Although the private equity industry can be considered to include venture capital, growth capital, and mezzanine capital, it is common for the term “private equity” to be the principal descriptor of leveraged buyout (LBO) activity. Investment firms that engage in LBO transactions are called private equity firms, buyout firms, or financial sponsors. This chapter principally focuses on the LBO activities of private equity firms. Topics include the history, key characteristics, targets, and structure of private equity transactions.
