Abstract

This chapter reviews the history of geothermal development of Miravalles Power Station at Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica. The geothermal power complex at Miravalles is about 220 km from San Jose; that sits in the Guanacaste province with the view of majestic volcanoes. The details of the various power plants at Miravalles and the Costa Ricans overcame two serious obstacles that could have blocked the development of the field. There are several aspects of geothermal power development that might adversely affect the environment, but at each step Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) took action to mitigate these effects. Throughout the development of geothermal resources at Miravalles and now at Rincon de la Vieja, ICE is sensitive to preserving the environment from any harmful effects. An extensive network of ground-level measuring stations is in place to detect any subsidence or uplift over the entire Miravalles region and surrounding areas. No adverse effects of any kind have been detected to date after 25 years of development and more than 10 years of power generation.
