Abstract

This chapter deals with electric furnace steelmaking, a tool for the massive production of steel, that is responsible for 30% of current worldwide production. The EAF is a field for the dynamic development of technology, adapting to changing and challenging scenarios. The chapter includes raw materials, furnace construction, melting practice and metallurgy, energy considerations, special furnaces, environmental and safety issues, and future aspects. Consideration is given both to metallurgical aspects and operating practice, taking regional variations into account.
