Abstract

Biohydrogen is deemed a fuel with bright prospects arising from its potent energy explosion and attractive ecological features. Generation of biohydrogen does not tap on fossil fuels in comparing with the current commercial hydrogen production methods. It is considered a renewable biofuel and an ideal energy source in combating pressing emissions from fossil fuels. While various biohydrogen technologies have been developed, conversion via microbial reactions is in the initial stage of development. This chapter reviewed the advances in bioreactor and bioprocess design on production of biohydrogen, underscoring the biohydrogen metabolisms, factors influencing production processes, and design considerations for bioprocess and bioreactors. Challenges and prospects of production of biohydrogen were outlined.
