Abstract

This chapter describes current knowledge of fishes in James Bay, Hudson Bay, and Hudson Strait. Foxe Basin is excluded because of insufficient sampling of the fish fauna. This chapter reflects the disparity between the understanding of marine fishes and that of the important coastal and anadromous fishes. The chapter also describes the role of water masses in determining the number and type of marine species occurring in the area and the role that geological events that have played in post-glacial colonization by freshwater and euryhaline fishes. The second part discusses the structure of fish assemblages in marine waters based on recent trawling surveys in Hudson and Davis straits and in coastal waters based on extensive sampling of estuaries in eastern James-Hudson Bay. The dominant feeding patterns of fish that appear throughout the region are also discussed. The cycles of representative marine and coastal fishes in James–Hudson Bay is explained.
