Abstract
The first line of defense against biting flies, particularly mosquitoes, is the use of personal protective measures. In this chapter, we discuss the use of topical insect repellents, clothing, bed nets treated with pyrethroid insecticides, and other barriers to protect individuals against mosquito bites. The use of these protective measures in combination with basic engineering and avoiding potential mosquito habitats during dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are more active, will provide the best protection against biting mosquitoes in all areas, including Texas.
