Abstract

Contamination of heavy metal ions in water bodies has become the main cause of water pollution which deteriorates the life of flora and fauna. Water scarcity and exponential demand for clean water has been mould research to treat wastewater using cost-effective, eco-friendly hybrid materials. The present chapter highlights the scavenging heavy metal ions using three dimensional (3D) functional aerogels composite. Among different adsorbent materials, aerogels have been focused much attention as a result of a porous covalently bonded interconnected nanoscaled structure having exceptionally, high surface area together with low density and low thermal conductivity. Several chemical routes (pyrolysis, freeze-drying, supercritical drying) have been employed to maintain 3D network of composite aerogels consisting of low density, high porosity, and specific surface area. Based on substantial metal removal capacity, the composite aerogels can be effectively used for the removal and recovery of volatile organic carbon (VOC) and organic pollutants from the air and water, respectively.
