Abstract

The Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) digital television (DTV) broadcast standard is used in the United States, Canada, South Korea, Taiwan, and Argentina. The three other primary DTV standards are digital video broadcast (DVB), Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting (ISDB), and OpenCable. A comparison among the standards is shown using a table in the chapter. The basic audio and video capabilities are very similar. The major differences are the radio frequency modulation schemes and the level of definition for non-audio/ video services. The chapter analyzes the ATSC Digital Television standard used in the United States. The ATSC standard uses an MPEG-2 transport stream to convey compressed digital video, compressed digital audio, and ancillary data over a single 6 MHz channel. Within this transport stream can be a single HDTV program, multiple SDTV programs, data, or a combination of these.
