Abstract
Bacteria are microorganisms with the potential to carry or release several antibiotic-resistant genes (ARGs) in wastewaters, which causes adverse effects on the environment and human health. The conventional methods applied to wastewater treatment plants are suitable for the removal of standard pollutants, such as organic matter, however, they have no proven effectivity in removing antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and their ARG. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are technologies explored in the degradation of poorly biodegradable organic pollutants in effluents and have been widely used as an alternative to conventional treatments, as well as strategies aimed at disinfection in wastewater contaminated with ARB. The AOP techniques are based on the formation of the hydroxyl radical, reacting nonselectively with a high oxidation power, allowing the degradation of biological. For this reason, AOP technologies of treatment can be used to mitigate not only ARB but also ARG in effluents.
