Abstract
Publisher Summary This chapter discusses trace determination of lanthanides in high-purity rare-earth oxides. The determination requires judicious selection of an analytical technique for the specified determination of traces of lanthanides in high-purity rare-earth oxides. Various analytical procedures have been developed for this purpose. All lanthanides have similar absorption spectra when they are reacted with a chromogenic agent, hence it is very difficult to determine traces of lanthanides in high-purity rare-earth oxides. However, two procedures have been described for the determination of neodymium, one in Y 2 0 3 and the other in yttrium aluminum garnet. There is a higher-order derivative procedure for the simultaneous determination of lanthanum and europium. This method is based on the utilization of the third-order derivative for the determination of lanthanum and the second-order derivative for europium after reaction with bromopyrogallol red as the chromogenic reagent. A few fluorimetric procedures have been described for the trace determination of lanthanides in high-purity rare-earth oxides, such as cerium in rare-earth ores and R 2 O 3 concentrates, terbium in La 2 O 3 and many more.
