Abstract

The management of thoracic disc herniations presents a paradox to the casual observer. One of the most accepted features of thoracic disc disease is its infrequency in comparison with the more common cervical and lumbar disc herniations. Yet for such a “rare” entity, a remarkably wide array of effective surgical techniques has been developed. This chapter discusses the major open surgical approaches to the herniated thoracic disc and offers guidance in selecting one procedure over another. Successful management of these lesions requires a thorough understanding of the spectrum of available procedures.
