Abstract
Volcanic rocks have unique attributes as well as attributes of both sedimentary and crystalline rock. Their unique attributes include a distinctive set of landforms that includes major volcanoes, lava plateaus, and lava fields. Chapter 14 discusses the recent ( 20 Ma) volcanic rocks are andesitic and rhyolitic in composition and are associated with subduction along the western Cordilleran coast. Explosive caldera formation during the circa 33 Ma ignimbrite flare-up is associated with subduction. Younger rocks are dominantly basaltic in composition and are associated with the Yellowstone hot spot. However, young, explosive, silicic calderas are also present, including Yellowstone, Long Valley, and Valles.
