Abstract

This chapter reviews the use of thermoset coatings in the protection of pipelines against corrosion. The most used thermoset coating type is fusion-bonded epoxy (FBE), which is in the powder form before the application, and it has been applied on pipelines for more than 50 years. It has been used externally as a stand-alone product in single-layer systems, as both the primer and topcoat in dual-layer FBE (2LFBE) systems and as a primer in three-layer polyolefin (3LPO) systems. Two-part liquid linings and again FBE have been used internally for gas and liquid transfer pipelines. External pipeline coating systems are used for the properties such as damage, impact, and cathodic disbondment resistance. Internal pipeline coatings are applied to the pipes for the required properties such as flow efficiency, chemical resistance, and abrasion resistance.
