Abstract
Since the development of the first triboelectric nanogenerator by Professor Wang's group in 2012, triboelectric nanogenerators have emerged as an innovative class of energy-harvesting devices and self-powered sensors. The focus of this chapter is to carry out a literature review of the state of the art of the practical applications of triboelectric nanogenerators as self-powered active sensors for pressures, vibrations, and impacts. To address this task, the authors comment on and analyze some of the most relevant publications in the field with a special focus on the following aspects of the devices: mechanism of generation of electricity in triboelectric nanogenerators, selection of the optimum materials/configurations for the fabrication of nanogenerators, fabrication of triboelectric nanogenerators using efficient fabrication processes, and applications of triboelectric nanogenerators as self-powered sensors, among other interesting topics. In overview, the present work sheds light on the potential of triboelectric nanogenerators as self-powered sensors for the measurement of pressures, vibrations, and impacts.
