Abstract

The goal of this chapter is to provide the reader with examples of the extensive chemistry of pincer ligand systems containing dicarboxamide- or dithiocarboxamide-based functional groups on pyridine and phenyl frameworks. The fascinating chemistry of just a fraction of these two classes of pincers is showcased for those constructed around these two meta-substituted building blocks. Examples are highlighted crossing the fields of both transition metal and supramolecular coordination chemistry, and include catalysis, carbon dioxide activation, bioinorganic mimics, and sensing and recognition of neutral molecules, cations, anions, and ion pairs. A major focus of the chapter is on the versatility of these ligand systems as exemplified by their multifaceted chemistry, as well as structural aspects related to the aptitude of pincers for multidentate binding in both transition metal and supramolecular coordination chemistry.
