Abstract

Skin complaints and infections affect all age groups from the neonate to the elderly, causing dangerous conditions in some of the cases. It has been estimated that skin diseases amount to as high as 30% of all occupational diseases. Along with this high prevalence, a high rate of resistance in microorganisms causing skin diseases has been observed. Hence, the search for new antibiotics is essential in medicine. Natural sources such as plants, fungi, and insects are the most important to screen for new antibiotic compounds. Screening of these sources forms a major investigation phase in the research into infectious diseases. In this chapter, we present an overview of some of the natural chemical classes of compounds with the most potential, with consideration of traditional utilization of their natural sources.
