Abstract

This chapter discusses various sources of literary abstracts and periodicals. Abstracts consist of synopses of material on a particular topic—periodical articles, documents, or books. Abstracts and periodicals are classified at their subject, with the addition of the standard subdivision. There are several universal bibliographies of literary research covering periodical articles published during a specific period of time. The Year's Work in Modern Language Studies is sponsored by the Modern Humanities Research Association. The first volume covers 1929–30. Each volume has a number of chapters written by specialists and containing a running commentary on Medieval Latin, French and Provençal, Hispanic, Italian, German, Scandinavian, and Slavonic studies. The Modern Language Association of America also issues MLA International Bibliography (1922– ) as a supplement to the Publications of the Modern Language Association of America. A specimen page from the Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature indicates the range of the entries under the 20th century. Studies are listed of Sir Max Beerbohm, Brendan Behan, Adrian Bell, Hilaire Belloc, Saul Bellow, S. V. Benêt, and Arnold Bennett. Another valuable annual survey is The Year's Work in English Studies 1919– (1921– ), sponsored by the English Association.
