Abstract

This chapter discusses a common base for social work in relation to values and knowledge. It is apparent when one thinks about such situations that none can claim absolute autonomy, or an absolute right to self-determination, because the behavior of any member of a society affects the rights and the autonomy of all those in contact with him. The issue of social control: the accusation that while one proclaims the respect for autonomy and self-determination is actually nothing but agents of social control. There is a world of difference between having and exercising a social control function, and being nothing but an instrument of social control. The good social worker should never be a mere instrument of control, and this is what makes social work the most humane instrument of such control that people have.
