Abstract

The PID controller can be considered the industry standard controller. Because of its widespread use, the PID controller is presented in detail in this chapter. The action of the three independent control components (proportional, integral, and derivative) are explained with root locus and frequency-response analyses. Some methods for PID controller tuning are covered, and circuits to realize PID control are proposed. Furthermore, implementation of PID control in a digital, time-discrete system is presented, together with the differences between continuous and time-discrete system responses.
