Abstract
This chapter revisits C. R.'s business trip in Chapter 1 and looks at the details for Web Services and service-oriented architectures along with some of the architectural options used in his story. When C. R. sat down to set up his business trip, he used the portal Web site. The portal had access to read internal information in C. R.'s organization, as well as access to services on the Internet using Web Services. C. R. accessed the business intelligence (BI) software for selecting the customers to visit over his organization's Web Services. The portal was designed to take the contact information from the messages returned by the BI software and pass the contact information along with other travel criteria that C. R. provided to the travel agency service at the time he selected the “Submit” button. The portal also informed the internal agent as to which customers C. R. would want to monitor. The travel agency service took it from there, arranging the remainder of the trip, and informing C. R. of any details that needed attention.
