Abstract

In 1963, in response to the impact of the drug Thalidomide, Canada founded Prosthetic Research and Training Centres in Toronto, Winnipeg and Montreal and later Fredericton, funded by the Department of National Health and Welfare. They worked together on solutions to the problems created by limb impairment. The focus for upper limb research was in Toronto and Fredericton. The Ontario Crippled Children's Centre was the clinical centre that produced powered prostheses for children and led to the formation of the VASI company.
