Abstract

The North East Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEAFC) forms the framework for international cooperation on fisheries management beyond waters of national fisheries jurisdiction in the North East Atlantic. Are there lessons to be learned from the work to modernize NEAFC? This question examines how NEAFC has organized the work to implement sustainability principles. A crucial factor in this regard is the institutional and legal changes undertaken. Further, it is essential to consider what practical measures have been taken to implement sustainability principles and what effect they have had. The chapter focuses on addressing these issues, which are high on the international agenda, has had the desired effect. Have high seas fisheries in the NEAFC Regulatory Area become more sustainable? The management measures adopted, known as recommendations, include setting total allowable catches (TAC) and allocation, and deciding on fishing effort.
