Abstract

ABSTRACT The ever increasing demand for better and reliable mechanical systems necessitates the explicit consideration of reliability in the modeling and design of mechanical systems. The inadequacy of the traditional factor of safety in ensuring proper degree of safety of mechanical systems is explained. The differences between the reliability modeling of electronic/electrical and mechanical systems are outlined. The role of modeling strength, load, and geometry in the reliability analysis of mechanical and structural systems is described. The methods of analyzing the probability of failure of weakest-link and fail-safe systems are presented. The modeling and analysis methods described in this chapter are illustrated through the reliability analysis of a compound gear train and a Geneva mechanism. The techniques presented in this work are quite general and are applicable for the modeling, analysis, and design of any mechanical system.
