Abstract

This chapter introduces Japan's international cooperation on climate change by mitigation and adaptation. Japan has worked on climate change impacts in developing countries through Official Development Aid, Reducing emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in developing countries, Clean Development Mechanism, and Joint Crediting Mechanism. By the end of the chapter, challenges and solutions regarding Japan's international cooperation on climate change are discussed. International society tends to focus more on mitigation than adaptation. However, adaptation is as important as mitigation. This chapter also explains the importance and higher cost-effectiveness of adaptation by analyzing two projects by the Japan International Cooperation Agency. Then it is recommended that Japan will provide more adaptation projects and promote discussions about adaptation in the world because adaptation projects connote a win-win policy and co-benefit that can simultaneously deliver more benefits and effects.
