Abstract

The amount of electronic waste (E-waste) in China is growing dramatically. The Chinese government has continuously issued a series of laws and regulations and established a fund subsidy system based on extended producer responsibility (EPR) principles. Currently, the amount of E-waste formally treated has grown steadily. The layout of formal sector has been nearly completed, providing an increased recycling capacity. In this chapter, we present a comprehensive summary of E-waste generation, recycling capacity, reuse process, treatment techniques, as well as the legislation of E-waste in China. There are still some bottlenecks in E-waste management: The imbalance between fund levy and subsidy is not properly solved. The use of a “Fund Policy” has cultivated the formal disassembly activities, but the collection system for E-waste is currently imperfect. Also, the recycling efficiency of the disassembled parts needs to be improved. In the future, a more integrated E-waste management system should be established based on the lifecycle perspective.
